About the Little Blue Pill

What it is
A prescription-only tablet for men with erectile dysfunction. It helps increase blood flow to the penis, making it easier to get and keep an erection.
It only works when you're sexually aroused. It doesn't cause an erection on its own, and it isn't an aphrodisiac.
How and when to take it
Take one tablet as needed, about an hour before sex. Don't take it more than once a day.
Taking it with food, especially a heavy meal, can delay when it starts to work. Your prescriber chooses the strength that's right for you.
How long it can work for
In a clinical study, men could still get an erection in response to sexual stimulation 4 to 5 hours after taking a dose. How long it works, and how well, varies from person to person.
Common side effects
Headache is the most common side effect. Others that are common include:
- flushing or hot flushes
- indigestion, or feeling sick
- a blocked nose
- dizziness
- changes to vision, such as blurring or a coloured tinge
Not everyone gets side effects. Stop taking it and get urgent medical help if you have chest pain, an erection lasting more than 4 hours, or a sudden loss or decrease of vision. Individual results vary and we can't guarantee results.

Who it's for, and who it isn't

It may be suitable if you
- Are a man aged 18 or over with erectile dysfunction
- Want a treatment you take only when you plan to have sex
- Can tell us honestly about your health and every medicine you take
It isn't suitable if you
- Take any nitrate medicine (such as GTN spray or isosorbide for angina) or use "poppers" (amyl nitrite)
- Take riociguat, a medicine for high blood pressure in the lungs
- Have a heart condition that makes sex unsafe, such as unstable angina or severe heart failure
- Have had a stroke or heart attack recently, or have low blood pressure
- Have severe liver problems
- Have lost sight in one eye from NAION (a problem with blood flow to the optic nerve), or have an inherited eye condition such as retinitis pigmentosa
This isn't a full list. Tell us about every medicine you take, including ones bought without a prescription, and any heart, blood pressure, liver, kidney or eye conditions. The prescriber uses this to decide whether treatment is safe for you.
